Eating and Drinking in Amsterdam
(Amsterdam, Netherlands)
Restaurants in Amsterdam
Amsterdam has many excellent restaurants serving up mouth-watering food from around the world. Although Dutch cuisine is hardly famous, traditional Dutch delicacies such as tasty cheeses, raw herrings and superb beer, can found at shops and cafés throughout the city. It's also quite an international city with plenty of foreign restaurants, particularly Indonesian. These can be found in the Red Light District and scattered about Leidse and Rembrandt Pleins (squares). Obviously the further away from the tourist areas you go, the better the value and the coffee shop culture is particularly popular here.
The city also enjoys a lively nightlife and is known as one of the party capitals of Europe. Amsterdam is home to many excellent bars and nightclubs, some featuring live music and entertainment. Popular areas for dining and drinking include the Leidseplein and Rembrandts plein where you will find rowdy pubs and a good atmosphere on football evenings, with the Dutch behaving in a generally friendly and jovial way.
Some coffee shops and 'brown cafés' in Amsterdam sell cannabis, which is tolerated by the authorities and they are discreetly tucked away or else liberally found in the Red Light District. Strict monitoring sees to it that bars do not serve both alcohol and marijuana, so that they end up with one of two distinct atmospheres. There is also a large underground rave scene, advertised by fly posters and taking place out of the centre in warehouses.
